Virtualization

Virtualization is changing the face of IT delivery models.  IT resources, including servers and storage arrays, are abstracted by masking the physical nature and boundaries of those resources from resource users.  Virtualization technologies are making it easy to consolidate to larger resources while also making distributed resources easier to manage, re-provision and use efficiently.  Virtualization is not just a passing trend; in most IT environments it allows for more efficient use of resources.  The Gartner Group predicts virtualization will be the transformational phase to a new service delivery model.  The diagram below from Gartner (March 2008) illustrates IT architecture trends over the next decade and  shows virtualization as an intermediary phase towards automated IT infrastructures (cloud computing architecture).
